The value of material wellbeing

Apart from all psychological and physiological family values, there also so-called vital values, which are included into the value of material wellbeing. Economic motives of marriage have always existed. There were times, when they were dominating and due to this fact families were strong and lifelong, because in the majority of cases divorce meant poverty and beggary for women and children and lower social status for men. Due to this fact families were stronger in past times, because love was concomitant and not obligatory. The main priority was physical survival for family members.

Nowadays many things have changed. Owing to innovations and economical progress, women became more independent from men and now they can be breadwinners alone and can keep their families themselves. Moreover, women can even excel their husbands in wage rates. This situation occurs very often nowadays and undermines centuries-old foundations of family life.

The fact that women are able to earn enough money to provide themselves and their children with everything necessary doesn't relive men of responsibility for secure their families and fulfil the role of breadwinners. It is especially topical for young families with little children, where wives have to be on maternity leave and have no opportunity to work up. If a woman fulfils purely female tasks, the whole burden and responsibility for financial wellbeing of a family should be taken by her husband.

As you see the value of material wellbeing is of very complex character. If we take a classical model of the family, where male and female responsibilities are clearly allocated, this value plays an important role of consolidation of the family. The classical family implies interdependence and collaboration of all family members, who can't live without this family. On the other hand, in advanced and liberal societies, where women are equal to men and have an opportunity to earn as much money as men, the value of material wellbeing, being very important as well, becomes rather a value of an individual, than a family value. In other words, material wellbeing can be no longer used as an additional argument in favour of keeping the home fire burning.
